Manual vs Automatic. It seems to come up at least once every two weeks here, with strings of people praising glory to the manuel while lambasting anyone who would even THINK that owning an automatic is okay.

Kinja'd!!!

Of course, as we all know the manual is dying, and with its future unclear I want to ponder a possible future where the manual is no longer available on new cars. What will we argue about then?

Manual will never die, it'll just become an enthusiast only thing. It pretty much already is.

It'll be pretty much the same argument too. That it "takes away from the driving experience."

Never say never...I think there's a decent chance we will reach a point when on mainstream cars so few people choose manual that manufacturers stop offering it. I don't think it's going to happen any time soon, but I think it will. By 2030 I'd be surprised if any new cars have manuals.

My vote for last 3 standing are GTI, WRX, and Wrangler, in no particular order.

The automotive industry is quite serious about automated driving but it seems that we are still quite far away from globally available vehicles that would be totally autonomous. Google's test vehicles have operated very well but they depend heavily on 3d scanned road mapping. And the vehicles still require human operation in situations where the vehicle will get confused about the situation.

Some semi autonomous systems are already on market but so far they are only able to stay on lane and keep suitable distance to the vehicle in front. Totally autonomous vehicles will be seriously entering market at some point but it probably happens 15-20 years from now.

I think that manual-automatic battle will continue but it will also include different hybrid systems and different fuels (diesel, petrol/gas, CNG, LNG etc).

It'll be the clutch pedal, then the combustion engine, then the steering wheel. They will all die in that order, and every time I'll be the side of the curmudgeon.

I don't think any of those will be it, especially the GTi. I'm surprised the GTi is still available with a manual to be honest, and Subaru sure seems eager to force a CVT on the WRX. I didn't even know the Wrangler could still be had with a manual...

It's going to be the Miata or Toyosubascion.

I'm going to go with a future Japanese base-model econobox. They will only sell 47 with a manual, and twenty years down the road they will sell for triple the MSRP at Barrett-Jackson

I don't Apple, but I do have a Tomtom app with offline maps on my phone. I've used it in 8 different countries and I've never encountered the problems people have with Apple Maps.

edit: maybe I should've gone along with the joke. Oh well...

I dunno about the pickup. Ford and GM are both auto-only on all pickups currently, and based on an inventory search in my area the manual to auto ratio on Rams is only about 10%.

not to stir the pot, but Gizmoto or Gawker had a Ford designer on for questions. Somebody asked why tachometers were still relevant and stated they were a waste of space. The comment got shared to Oppo and I'll let you figure out what ensued.

The next one will by how many gears can you cram in that automatic that we used to kill the manual. Where are we at now? 8? How long until road cars mimic 18 wheelers with 18 gears all slushing about to and fro
